Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey (R) is investigating four major tech companies—Google, Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI—over claims their AI chatbots exhibit political bias against Donald Trump. On Wednesday, Bailey sent letters demanding internal records on algorithm design and input selection, citing concerns over potential consumer deception.
Bailey’s probe centers on chatbot responses rating U.S. presidents on antisemitism. He noted that Microsoft’s Copilot refused to answer, while Google’s Gemini, Meta AI, and OpenAI’s ChatGPT all ranked Trump lowest—a result he called “deeply misleading.”
“We must aggressively push back against this new wave of censorship targeted at our President,” Bailey said, warning that manipulated chatbot responses could violate the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act, which bans deceptive business practices.
The attorney general is requesting documents on how the chatbots were programmed and whether the companies intentionally designed them to disfavor certain political perspectives.
The inquiry comes amid controversy over xAI, where Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot recently drew criticism for antisemitic content before company intervention.
Bailey argues that, given the companies’ financial reach in Missouri, they fall under his authority to protect consumers from potential AI-generated misinformation.
