WASHINGTON, D.C. — Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar forcefully rejected claims by the Trump administration that she is under investigation for immigration fraud, dismissing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated amid escalating rhetoric targeting the state’s Somali community.

Omar, a Democrat who represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, responded after White House border czar Tom Homan said during a Newsmax interview that federal investigators were reviewing her case. Asked about the comments on Capitol Hill, Omar said she does not know what is being investigated and insisted authorities would find nothing improper.

Homan’s remarks echoed long-running accusations, promoted by President Donald Trump and his allies without evidence, alleging Omar committed immigration fraud through marriage. Omar has repeatedly denied the claim, and no charges have ever been filed. Homan suggested the statute of limitations previously prevented action, while implying renewed scrutiny under the current administration.

The exchange comes amid heightened tensions in Minnesota following stepped-up federal immigration enforcement and Trump’s recent remarks criticizing the state’s Somali population. Omar said over the weekend that her son was questioned by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at a Target store in Minnesota before being released after showing his passport. The Department of Homeland Security denied the encounter, accusing Omar of exaggerating the incident.

Omar has warned that federal actions and rhetoric are fueling racial profiling fears among Somali Americans, many of whom are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Minnesota is home to one of the largest Somali communities in the country, a group Omar says has increasingly been singled out in political attacks tied to unrelated fraud cases.
