EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — Democrat Mikie Sherrill delivered a decisive victory Tuesday night in the New Jersey governor’s race, defeating Republican Jack Ciattarelli 56% to 43%, according to the Associated Press. The four-term congresswoman and former federal prosecutor took the stage at the Hilton East Brunswick Hotel to chants of “Mikie! Mikie!” as she became only the second woman ever elected to lead the Garden State.
In her victory speech, Sherrill vowed to defend New Jersey against what she described as harmful federal policies under President Donald Trump’s administration, citing cuts to food assistance, health subsidies, and infrastructure funding. “Governors have never mattered more,” she told cheering supporters, pledging to “fight for a different future in New Jersey.”
Sherrill’s campaign focused heavily on affordability, health care, and defending democracy, framing the race as a referendum on Trump’s influence. “New Jersey takes oaths to the Constitution, not a king,” she said, promising to govern on behalf of all residents.
Democratic leaders, including Gov. Phil Murphy and Sen. Cory Booker, joined the celebration, declaring the win a signal that “blue is back.” Sherrill’s victory breaks a 60-year trend preventing either party from holding the governor’s mansion for more than two consecutive terms. Her running mate, the Rev. Dale Caldwell, will serve as lieutenant governor.
Sherrill takes office in January, succeeding Murphy, amid ongoing legal and political battles between New Jersey and the Trump administration.
