A Kent County judge has denied a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit filed by Michigan librarian Christine Beachler against Moms for Liberty associate Stefanie Boone, allowing the case to proceed to discovery.
Beachler, a longtime educator and library media director for Lowell Area Schools, alleges Boone launched a “smear campaign” that included false and damaging statements online, accusing her of distributing pornography to minors. In an earlier interview, Beachler said she was labeled a “groomer,” “pedophile,” and “smut peddler,” comments she described as deeply hurtful and untrue.
Boone’s attorney, Matt DePerno—a former GOP candidate for Michigan Attorney General currently facing felony charges related to election equipment tampering—said they plan to prove their claims in court. “We’re excited to move forward with discovery and show that the librarian is pushing porn on kids and that she peddles smut,” DePerno told Michigan Advance.
Beachler’s attorney, Elizabeth Geary, said the ruling was a step toward justice for her client and a rebuke of politically motivated attacks on educators.
Boone has filed a separate lawsuit against Beachler and the school district, alleging violations of her parental rights. That case is pending in federal court.
