A new Pew Research Center analysis highlights significant differences between Washington and Idaho residents on the issue of teacher-led prayer in public schools. The report, part of Pew’s 2025 Religious Landscape Study, found 61% of Washington adults oppose Christian prayers referencing Jesus in classrooms, while only 37% favor them.

In contrast, Idaho adults were more supportive, with 55% in favor and 44% opposed, putting the state in the “divided” category. When the question was broadened to generic references to “God,” support in Idaho rose to 58%, shifting the state into the “favor” category.

Washington support also increased for nonsectarian prayers, with 56% in favor, but it remains one of 12 states where opposition still outweighs support.

The study notes that Muslim and Hindu respondents showed the largest increases in support when prayer references were made to “God” rather than specific deities or figures.
