In a significant shift in pest control rankings, Los Angeles has officially surpassed Chicago as the “rattiest” city in the United States, according to Orkin’s annual assessment released this week. This marks the first time in over a decade that Chicago has not held the top position in the rankings, which are based on rodent service requests across major metropolitan areas.

Orkin attributes Los Angeles’ ascension to its warmer climate, which promotes higher survival and reproduction rates for rats. “Hotter cities are seeing themselves rise in the rankings,” the company stated, highlighting a broader nationwide trend of increasing rodent populations.

Following Los Angeles and Chicago in the rankings are New York City, San Francisco, and Hartford, Connecticut, which made a remarkable leap of eight spots from last year. The top ten cities are rounded out by Washington, D.C., Detroit, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and Denver.

Additionally, Tampa, Florida, experienced the most significant movement in the rankings, surging 13 places to enter the top 25.

This report underscores ongoing concerns that rising temperatures and urban density are driving higher levels of rodent activity in major cities across the country, highlighting a growing challenge for urban pest control efforts.
