The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin criticized Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) this week after he voted to block an amendment requiring public release of government records related to Jeffrey Epstein. The amendment, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer as part of the defense authorization bill, would have directed the Justice Department to disclose all unclassified Epstein-related files within 30 days. It was defeated 51–49, with all Democrats voting against tabling and Republican Sens. Rand Paul and Josh Hawley siding with them.

In a September 14 statement, the Libertarian Party accused Johnson of choosing “secrecy over transparency” and “power over accountability.” The group said the Epstein case illustrates how powerful figures are shielded by institutions that should uphold justice.

The party noted Johnson campaigned on fighting corruption but argued his vote contradicted those promises. By contrast, Paul and Hawley were praised for supporting disclosure. “Transparency is not a partisan issue,” the statement said. “Wisconsin voters expect their representatives to stand against cover-ups, not participate in them.”

The party tied the vote to its long-standing warnings about concentrated political power, framing Johnson’s decision as further evidence of institutions protecting themselves over citizens’ right to know.
