The Libertarian Party of North Carolina has sharply criticized the Trump administration, accusing it of dangerously expanding federal power and undermining constitutional rights.
In an August 19 statement, state chair Ryan Brown said the deployment of military personnel in Washington, D.C., and California violates the Posse Comitatus Act, which restricts armed forces from domestic law enforcement. He argued policing should remain under accountable civilian agencies.
The statement also condemned reported stop-and-frisk tactics in D.C., calling them unconstitutional and disproportionately harmful to minorities, and criticized federal moves to criminalize homelessness. The party objected to unmarked and masked federal agents detaining residents, likening the tactics to authoritarian regimes.
Brown contrasted the secrecy surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein case with what he described as excessive policing of ordinary Americans. He urged elected officials to oppose the measures and demanded the administration restore transparency, accountability, and protections for civil liberties.
“We call on all elected officials, regardless of party affiliation, to stand up against these abuses of power,” Brown said.
