Health leaders across Kentucky are calling on the U.S. House to reject Senate changes to Donald Trump‘s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” warning the legislation could strip care and food access from hundreds of thousands. Passed 51-50 with Vice President JD Vance’s tie-breaking vote, the Senate version cuts deeper into Medicaid and SNAP than the House bill.
Critics include food banks, hospitals, and community clinics. “This bill is ugly for Kentuckians,” said Dr. Bart Irwin of Family Health Centers. Planned Parenthood warned the bill could strip Medicaid access from thousands relying on their Louisville and Lexington clinics.
Sen. Rand Paul voted no, citing deficit concerns. Rep. Thomas Massie opposed the House version for similar reasons. Meanwhile, Rep. Hal Rogers supported the bill despite his district’s 44% Medicaid reliance.
Advocates say cuts will worsen hunger, shutter rural hospitals, and risk lives—especially for those receiving addiction treatment via Medicaid. “This is NOT what the American people voted for,” said Rep. Pamela Stevenson, who’s running for Mitch McConnell’s seat.
