Columbus, Ohio — An Ohio grand jury has indicted an Illinois vascular surgeon in the December killings of his ex-wife and her husband, ending weeks of national speculation surrounding a case that initially baffled investigators.
Court records show that a Franklin County grand jury charged Michael David McKee, 39, with two counts of aggravated murder and aggravated burglary, alleging he used a firearm suppressor in the killings. McKee is accused of fatally shooting his former wife, Monique Tepe, 39, and her husband, dentist Dr. Spencer Tepe, 37, inside their Columbus home on Dec. 30.
Authorities arrested McKee in Rockford, Illinois, on Jan. 10. He waived his right to an extradition hearing and is currently being held ahead of a scheduled court appearance later this month. The hospital where he worked, OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, has said it is cooperating with investigators. Court documents did not list an attorney for McKee.
Columbus Police Chief Elaine Bryant said evidence has increasingly pointed toward McKee. Investigators believe he was captured on video walking through a dark alley near the victims’ home the night of the murders. Police also identified his vehicle traveling in the area, and a firearm recovered from his Illinois residence reportedly matched forensic evidence from the scene. Authorities have not disclosed the specific type of weapon used.
The killings drew intense attention because there were no signs of forced entry, nothing was stolen, and the couple’s two young children and dog were unharmed. Police credited public tips with helping move the investigation forward.
