St. Paul, Minnesota — A Minnesota woman invited by Rep. Ilhan Omar to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address was arrested and later taken to a hospital after refusing to sit during the speech, according to NBC News.
Aliyah Rahman stood silently while Trump called on Democrats to restore funding for the Department of Homeland Security. U.S. Capitol Police approached her and instructed her to sit. When she refused, officers escorted her out of the gallery and arrested her on a charge of unlawful conduct for disrupting Congress.
Rahman, who uses a crutch, said officers handled her aggressively despite her telling them she has a torn rotator cuff and cartilage tears in both shoulders. She later received treatment at George Washington University Hospital before being booked at Capitol Police headquarters.
Capitol Police said State of the Union tickets clearly state that demonstrations are prohibited and that Rahman refused lawful orders.
Omar criticized the arrest and requested a full explanation.
