A surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity across the Phoenix area escalated tensions on Tuesday, leading to protests and a violent clash with Peoria police.

Agents with Homeland Security Investigations raided a Peoria home using flash bangs and a battering ram, arresting one person on federal charges and turning another over to immigration authorities. Local police blocked off the street as protesters, alerted via social media, gathered nearby. A scuffle broke out, resulting in one protester being tasered and arrested.

Critics fear the raids mirror Trump-era tactics, with growing alarm among immigrant advocacy groups that Phoenix may be the next epicenter after sweeping ICE raids in Los Angeles. Activists and residents expressed distrust in local law enforcement’s collaboration with federal agents, despite Peoria PD’s insistence it was only managing traffic.

Gov. Katie Hobbs condemned the violence, calling for peaceful demonstrations, and mobilized the Arizona Department of Public Safety to support law enforcement. Meanwhile, Phoenix police emphasized their non-involvement in the raids and encouraged calm.

Amid fears of expanded deportations, the protests signal intensifying scrutiny over local-federal enforcement partnerships and the ongoing human impact of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.
