Glen Burnie, Maryland — Federal immigration agents fired on a moving vehicle during an enforcement operation on Christmas Eve, injuring two people after authorities say the vehicle attempted to strike the agents. The shooting occurred around 10:50 a.m. during what Immigration and Customs Enforcement described as an enforcement and removal action, according to local and federal officials.
Anne Arundel County police said ICE agents approached a white van when the driver allegedly accelerated toward them. Agents then opened fire, striking one person and injuring another. The van continued moving before coming to a stop in a wooded area nearby. Police said neither injured person suffered life-threatening wounds and both were transported to a hospital for treatment.
Local authorities emphasized that ICE agents were the only law enforcement officers involved in the shooting itself. Anne Arundel County police are investigating the discharge of firearms, while the FBI is reviewing the alleged assault on federal agents. ICE has also launched an internal investigation into the incident.
The Department of Homeland Security said both civilians involved were in the United States illegally, though officials did not clarify whether either individual was taken into custody. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin warned that encouraging resistance to immigration enforcement could lead to further violent encounters.
The incident comes as federal immigration enforcement has intensified nationwide, drawing heightened scrutiny over tactics and use-of-force decisions. Officials said investigations remain ongoing and declined to provide additional details pending their outcome.
