Crown Point, Indiana – Franciscan Health Crown Point has fired a doctor and nurse who turned away a pregnant woman just minutes before she gave birth in a car outside the hospital, officials confirmed this week. The incident, captured in a viral video, showed staff wheeling the woman — identified as Mrs. Wells — out of the facility while she was visibly in severe pain. According to her family, she was in active labor, but staff insisted she was only dilated three centimeters and advised her to “come back later.”
Within minutes of leaving, Wells delivered her baby in a car as her family remained on the phone with 911 dispatchers. Emergency officials directed them to Community Hospital in Munster, where Wells and her newborn were admitted and recovered.
Franciscan Health Crown Point said both employees involved are no longer with the hospital. Leadership also announced new requirements, including cultural competency training and a revised assessment protocol for any patient leaving the labor and delivery unit. CEO Raymond Grady apologized publicly, stating that staff “failed to listen to Mrs. Wells’ concerns” and that the hospital must ensure every patient receives compassionate and equitable care.
The family expressed gratitude toward the Community Hospital staff who helped them after the traumatic experience. The case has renewed conversations about patient dismissal, medical bias, and failures in maternal care protocols.
