NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth sharply criticized what he called the “godless” left and defended “Western Christian” values during a speech at the National Religious Broadcasters 2026 International Christian Media Convention.

Addressing the Christian media gathering Thursday night, Hegseth declared the end of diversity, equity and inclusion programs within the military and dismissed climate initiatives as “worship to a false God.” He praised President Donald Trump’s leadership, saying the administration has restored focus on training troops and tending to their “spiritual health.”

“Gone is godless and divisive DEI,” Hegseth said, adding, “We train our troops, we no longer trans our troops,” referencing the administration’s ban on transgender service members.

Hegseth also criticized what he described as “dangerous and godless foreign ideologies” and suggested critics of the Pentagon’s monthly prayer services “hate it.” His remarks come days after he invited Christian nationalist pastor Doug Wilson to lead a worship service at the Pentagon, drawing scrutiny from critics concerned about church-state boundaries.

The convention featured a ceremonial color guard from the 101st Airborne Division’s band and a performance of the national anthem.
