GLENDALE, Calif. — The city of Glendale has officially canceled its nearly 20-year-old contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), citing growing public outrage over the Trump administration’s recent immigration crackdown.

The agreement had allowed ICE to detain suspected undocumented immigrants in the Glendale City Jail. However, City Manager Roubik Golanian ended the deal after a legal and community review, saying the decision “is rooted in what this City stands for—public safety, local accountability, and trust.”

While the city acknowledged that some detainees may now face challenges in seeing family or accessing legal aid, the jail will now serve only local law enforcement.

Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, 82 individuals have been held at the jail by ICE, according to NBC Los Angeles.

The announcement comes amid escalating protests in the Los Angeles area over ICE raids. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass have blamed the unrest on federal tactics, while Rep. Norma Torres bluntly told ICE to “get the f*** out of LA.”

Republicans defended the raids and Trump’s response. Sen. James Lankford likened the situation to the 2020 unrest in Seattle and Portland and said federal law must be upheld nationwide.
