Atlanta, Georgia – A wave of Republican officials across Georgia and Washington publicly thanked Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene for her service following her surprise resignation, even as President Donald Trump sharply criticized her decision and recent positions. Greene announced Friday she will step down on January 5, citing threats, internal party backlash, and disputes over the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
Within hours, state GOP leaders offered praise. Georgia Republican Party Chairman Josh McKoon thanked Greene for her “fierce and unwavering service,” calling her a persistent advocate for grassroots conservatives. He emphasized her reputation as a political outsider and said her “bold voice” would remain part of her legacy. Rep. Tom Massie, whom Trump singled out for criticism, said he was “very sad for our country but so happy” for his friend, adding that Greene “embodies what a true Representative should be.”
Across the state, Republicans framed her departure as a loss for their party. State Sen. Colton Moore said he is considering running for the open seat, describing Greene as a powerful partner to Trump and pledging to continue the “America First” agenda she championed. Other GOP activists echoed support online, praising her for standing up to party leadership and for pushing the Epstein files release.
While Trump accused Greene of quitting to avoid a primary challenge and criticized her alliance with Massie, Republican statements throughout Georgia largely avoided the feud. Leaders instead highlighted her grassroots backing, her visibility within the party, and her willingness to challenge Washington institutions.
Gov. Brian Kemp must now call a special election to fill the vacancy. Greene, first elected in 2020, did not announce future plans but said she hopes to work alongside “The People” to rebuild a political system she believes has failed ordinary Americans.
