ATLANTA, Georgia — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is pushing back against efforts by President Donald Trump and several former co-defendants to recover nearly $17 million in legal fees following the dismissal of her 2020 election interference case.

In a filing in Fulton County Superior Court, Willis argued that reimbursing the defendants would unfairly burden local taxpayers and could consume a significant portion, potentially all, of her office’s annual budget. Trump alone is seeking more than $6.2 million, with combined requests from other defendants bringing the total close to $17 million.

The reimbursement demands stem from a Georgia law passed last year allowing defendants to seek repayment of legal costs if a prosecutor is disqualified. Willis was removed from the case after courts found her relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade created an appearance of impropriety. The Georgia Supreme Court declined to hear her appeal, and the charges were later dismissed.

Willis criticized the statute as “punitive” and argued some expense claims include high-end travel and meals. Trump attorney Steve Sadow dismissed her objections as a “parody.”

The dispute now centers on whether county taxpayers must cover the defendants’ legal bills.
