Former National Security Advisor John Bolton has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Maryland on 18 counts related to the mishandling of classified information. The indictment alleges that Bolton, who served under President Donald Trump, stored and transmitted hundreds of pages of national defense information through unsecured personal email accounts.

According to prosecutors, Bolton shared “TOP SECRET/SCI-level” material in daily emails sent to two relatives from AOL and Google accounts between 2018 and 2025. The documents reportedly included sensitive national security information. The indictment also indicated that an Iranian-linked hacker breached Bolton’s private account in July 2021.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that individuals who misuse their positions of power and compromise national security will face accountability. FBI Director Kash Patel noted that the case was based on thorough investigative work and dismissed claims of political bias.

The case, led by a Biden-appointed prosecutor in Maryland, has drawn comparisons to previous indictments of figures such as former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James. Commentator Bill Brennan remarked on the prolonged nature of the Bolton investigation and the associated national security concerns.

Bolton has not issued a public comment following the indictment.
