A Florida woman is warning others after falling victim to a disturbing AI voice scam that used a cloned version of her daughter’s voice to demand thousands of dollars in fake bail money. Sharon Brightwell of Dover told WFLA the call came from what appeared to be her daughter’s number, with a sobbing voice claiming to have been in a car accident.

“There is nobody that could convince me that it wasn’t her,” Brightwell said. “I know my daughter’s cry.”

The caller claimed to have hit a pregnant woman while texting and driving. A man posing as an attorney told her the daughter was detained and needed $15,000 in cash bail. Following precise instructions, Brightwell withdrew the money and handed it off to a courier.

Later, she received another call claiming the unborn child had died and that $30,000 more was needed to avoid a lawsuit. At that point, a family member contacted her directly with her real daughter—safe at work—on the line.

The family believes the scam was powered by AI-generated audio created from online videos. They now advise others to set a private code word to verify real emergencies. A report has been filed with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
