Palm Bay, FL – A city councilmember in Florida is under fire following a series of inflammatory social media posts targeting Indian immigrants in the United States. Chandler Langevin, who was elected in 2024, posted derogatory comments on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that Indian immigrants “drain our pockets” and should be deported, igniting a wave of backlash from various community leaders and organizations.
The comments generated swift condemnation from national Indian American groups, several members of Congress, and concerned local residents who have been vocal at recent city council meetings, demanding Langevin’s resignation. The situation escalated to a formal censure when, on Thursday, the Palm Bay City Council voted 3-2 to reprimand Langevin for his remarks.
Mayor Rob Medina was particularly outspoken, stating, “This nation was founded on immigrants… We are all part of the very fabric of the flag, our banner, the United States of America.” His sentiments were echoed by community members who expressed deep concern over the divisive nature of Langevin’s statements.
Organizations such as Hindus for Human Rights criticized the posts as “overtly bigoted, dehumanizing, and dangerous,” calling on Governor Ron DeSantis to take further action against Langevin. The Asian American Hotel Owners Association also weighed in, warning that such rhetoric “echoes some of history’s darkest language.”
Political figures from both sides of the aisle have condemned Langevin’s statements. Senator Rick Scott and Representative Mike Haridopolos were among those who rebuked his comments, alongside Florida’s Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried. Local GOP chair Rick Lacey clarified that Langevin’s views do not represent the party, asserting that “his views are his alone.”
In response to the growing outrage, Langevin defended his comments in an interview with The Washington Post, suggesting that he was merely “sparking discourse” and adding, “I’m not the first Republican to make a mean tweet.”
As the controversy continues to unfold, many residents and advocacy groups are watching closely to see what further actions may be taken against Langevin, while the broader implications for community relations and immigrant rights remain uncertain.
