Tallahassee, Florida — Florida lawmakers are considering legislation that would eliminate the yellow registration decals currently required on vehicle license plates, replacing them with fully electronic verification systems. Two bills introduced in the state legislature would modernize how vehicle registrations are tracked and enforced across the state.

Senate Bill 982, filed by Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez, and House Bill 841, sponsored by Rep. Tom Fabricio, would end the use of physical registration stickers and instead require renewals to be recorded electronically. The proposal follows recommendations from Miami-Dade Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez, who argued that eliminating decals could save taxpayers millions of dollars by reducing production, mailing, and replacement costs.

Fernandez said physical stickers often fade, peel, or are stolen, while offering little real enforcement value. Law enforcement agencies, he noted, now rely on real-time electronic systems, including license plate readers and in-car databases, to instantly verify whether a vehicle is legally registered. Gov. Ron DeSantis publicly endorsed the proposal, responding “Get it done!” on social media.

If approved, the change would take effect next July. Drivers would still be required to renew their vehicle registrations annually, but proof of compliance would be handled digitally rather than through a visible decal. Supporters argue the shift would reduce fraud and align Florida with states such as Vermont, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, which have already eliminated similar stickers.

Pennsylvania officials reported saving more than $1 million annually in production costs and an additional $2 million in mailing expenses after making the switch. Florida lawmakers say the proposal reflects broader efforts to modernize government services while reducing unnecessary costs.
