EDGEWATER, Fla. — An 8-year-old boy in Volusia County saved his father’s life after using Narcan to reverse a suspected heroin overdose, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said the child was “forced into a situation no child should ever have to face” but acted heroically when he found his father, Daniel Jones, 44, unconscious at their Edgewater home.

Authorities said the boy had been taught by his father how to administer Narcan in the event of an overdose. Dispatchers stayed on the line with the child during the 911 call Tuesday as he followed the instructions he’d learned. Deputies arrived shortly after to find that the overdose reversal medication had likely saved Jones’s life.

Jones was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being arrested on charges of child neglect, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sheriff Chitwood praised the child’s composure under pressure while condemning the circumstances. “It’s tragic that he has to experience such trauma at such a young age,” he said.
