TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a $354 million lawsuit Thursday against Planned Parenthood, accusing the organization of racketeering and deception over claims that abortion medication is “safer than Tylenol.” The 37-page complaint, filed in Santa Rosa County Circuit Court, seeks $350 million under the state’s deceptive trade law and another $4 million under Florida’s racketeering statute.
Uthmeier, a former chief of staff to Gov. Ron DeSantis, argues that Planned Parenthood misleads women about the safety of medical abortions, which involve two pills approved by the CDC. He alleges the clinics profit by promoting abortion pills as risk-free and more profitable than surgical procedures.
Planned Parenthood did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Medical organizations such as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists dispute Uthmeier’s claim, saying research shows the abortion pill’s safety profile is comparable to that of acetaminophen.
The lawsuit escalates Florida’s broader effort to restrict abortion access following the state’s 15-week and six-week abortion bans enacted under DeSantis. Uthmeier also requested that, if deemed necessary, the court shut down Planned Parenthood’s operations in Florida.
