Harrisburg, Pennsylvania — The Pennsylvania Working Families Party (WFP) announced Tuesday that it will launch a campaign to primary Sen. John Fetterman in 2028, criticizing the Democrat for siding with Republicans to end the government shutdown, according to reporting from the Washington Examiner. While the group supported Fetterman in his 2022 race, it now labels him a “Trump-enabling corporate Democrat.”

WFP leaders pointed to Fetterman’s pivotal vote for the GOP-backed funding bill, which ended the shutdown but omitted an extension of Obamacare subsidies. The group claims the bill will “strip healthcare from over 400,000 Pennsylvanians,” and says it is preparing training sessions and volunteer recruitment to identify a challenger. No candidate has yet been selected.

Fetterman defended his vote, arguing that reopening the government was essential to protect military pay, federal workers, and families who depend on programs such as SNAP. In a social media post, he wrote that he chooses “country over party,” while reiterating his support for restoring the subsidies after the shutdown.

The senator has clashed with Democrats several times this year, criticizing what he calls party “virtue signaling,” supporting Trump administration military strikes in Iran, and backing aspects of Trump’s trade approach. His positions have fueled speculation among Democrats about a possible replacement, including whether former Rep. Conor Lamb might reenter statewide politics.

Fetterman, who recently suffered a ventricular fibrillation episode, has spoken openly about his health challenges and detailed his recovery in his new memoir Unfettered. His office did not respond to requests for comment.
