DETROIT, Mich. — Two men have been charged with terrorism-related crimes after federal agents uncovered an alleged plot to attack LGBTQ+ bars in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale, authorities announced Monday.

According to a 72-page criminal complaint unsealed in federal court, suspects Momed Ali and Majed Mahmoud were inspired by Islamic State ideology and had discussed coordinating violence during Halloween, referring to the planned attack as “pumpkins” in coded conversations.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi praised the arrests, writing on X that “our American heroes prevented a terror attack.” FBI Director Kash Patel first confirmed the arrests on Friday, following searches of a home in Dearborn and a storage unit in Inkster, where agents seized firearms and ammunition.

Ali and Mahmoud are charged with receiving and transferring weapons for terrorism purposes. Both were scheduled to make their initial court appearances Monday afternoon.

Mahmoud’s attorney, William Swor, declined to comment, while Ali’s lawyer, Amir Makled, called the allegations “hysteria” and “fearmongering.” Federal officials have not confirmed additional arrests but indicated that a minor was involved in the planning discussions.
