Brooklyn, New York — Federal authorities say a man impersonating an FBI agent was arrested Wednesday evening after allegedly attempting to secure the release of accused murderer Luigi Mangione from a federal detention facility in Brooklyn.
According to a criminal complaint, Mark Anderson was charged with one count of impersonating a federal officer after arriving at the Metropolitan Detention Center just before 7 p.m. Prosecutors allege Anderson falsely claimed to be an FBI agent and presented paperwork he said was “signed by a judge” authorizing Mangione’s release from custody. Court documents do not name the inmate Anderson sought to free, but a law enforcement source confirmed it was Mangione.
Officials said Anderson provided a Minnesota driver’s license and told jail personnel he was carrying weapons. After he was detained, officers reportedly discovered a large barbecue fork and a steel blade inside his backpack. Anderson was taken into custody without incident.
A law enforcement source told The Hill that Anderson had recently traveled to New York City for a job opportunity that did not materialize and had been working at a pizzeria prior to the arrest. Court records indicate Anderson does not yet have legal representation and could face up to three years in prison if convicted.
Mangione is awaiting trial on charges that he murdered UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan in December 2024. He has pleaded not guilty and has been held for months at the Metropolitan Detention Center, which houses several high-profile federal defendants. The Bureau of Prisons declined to comment, and Mangione’s legal team has not responded to requests for comment.
