EVANSTON, Ill. — Police in the Chicago suburb of Evanston are investigating a violent arrest involving U.S. Border Patrol agents after a crash between their vehicle and a sedan sparked chaos Friday, leading to three arrests and widespread outrage.

Video footage shows an agent kneeling on a handcuffed man and punching him in the head as bystanders shouted for officers to stop. Federal agents deployed pepper spray, pointed firearms toward onlookers, and detained three people following the collision, which occurred amid an expanded immigration enforcement effort ordered by President Donald Trump.

Witnesses claim the Border Patrol vehicle caused the crash by braking suddenly, though the Department of Homeland Security disputes that, saying the sedan was “aggressively tailgating” before impact. DHS said the officer’s punches were “defensive strikes” after the suspect allegedly “grabbed the agent’s genitals and squeezed.”

Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss condemned the agents’ conduct, calling it “an outrage” and telling federal authorities to “get the hell out of Evanston.” City leaders have reinforced “No ICE Zones” and directed police supervisors to document all immigration enforcement incidents for the Illinois attorney general’s Civil Rights Division.

Several bystanders were treated for pepper spray exposure, and police are reviewing video evidence.
