BERKELEY, California — The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced it will investigate the protests that turned violent during a Turning Point USA event at the University of California, Berkeley, following multiple arrests and reports of altercations. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon confirmed the probe Tuesday on X, citing “serious concerns regarding campus and local security and Antifa’s ability to operate with impunity in California.”
The Monday night unrest erupted outside Zellerbach Hall, where the conservative student group hosted a rally featuring guest speakers. According to local station KRON, demonstrations escalated into confrontations as protesters clashed with attendees and police, prompting arrests for vandalism and disorderly conduct.
While Dhillon and some attendees alleged that Antifa activists were involved, no verified evidence has been presented by authorities or reporters confirming Antifa’s participation. University officials and local law enforcement have not attributed the violence to any specific organization.
Dhillon, referencing prior unrest at Berkeley in 2017, said the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division will review whether campus and city officials adequately protected attendees’ rights. UC Berkeley said it supports free expression for all student groups and is cooperating with the ongoing federal inquiry.
