MIAMI, Florida — Miami voters elected Eileen Higgins as the city’s next mayor on Tuesday, ending nearly 30 years of Republican leadership and marking the first time a Democrat has held the office since the 1990s. Higgins, a former county commissioner, secured about 59% of the vote and defeated Republican Emilio González, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump.
Higgins framed her campaign around housing affordability, environmental resilience, and improving the city’s permitting system. She also emphasized anti-corruption reforms, a theme mirrored by González, who campaigned on lowering property taxes, adding police officers, and redesigning licensing procedures. Her victory drew national attention due to Trump’s involvement in a race that is officially nonpartisan but widely viewed as a political bellwether in South Florida.
The Democratic National Committee celebrated the result, calling it a sign of shifting voter sentiment in a region where Republicans have made steady gains in recent years. Higgins also became the first woman elected mayor of Miami, adding another milestone to Tuesday’s outcome. Local ballots included several additional races, with voters in Miami, Miami Beach, and Hialeah electing new commissioners and council members as part of the same municipal cycle.
The election is considered a boost for Democrats ahead of the 2026 midterm cycle and reinforces ongoing debates over housing, governance, and development across the Miami region.
