NEW YORK — Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (I) sharply criticized Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani on Sunday, calling him “the most divisive candidate I have ever experienced in New York.”

Speaking on WABC’s “Cats Roundtable,” Cuomo accused Mamdani of alienating multiple communities and promoting unrealistic policies. “He alienated the Jewish community, the Italian community, the LGBTQ community … He’s in favor of decriminalizing prostitution, freezing rents, and giving away free services,” Cuomo said. “The fact that he has zero qualifications is actually quite dangerous.”

Cuomo, who is running as an independent, trails Mamdani by 25 points in an Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey released Thursday. Mamdani, a democratic socialist, leads with 50% support, followed by Cuomo at 25% and Republican Curtis Sliwa at 21%.

Despite endorsements from current and former mayors Eric Adams and Michael Bloomberg, Cuomo faces an uphill battle against Mamdani’s energized progressive coalition. Former President Barack Obama reportedly spoke with Mamdani on Saturday, praising his campaign but stopping short of an endorsement.

Cuomo remains under Justice Department investigation over his administration’s handling of nursing home deaths during the 2020 pandemic.
