NORFOLK, Virginia — Authorities identified the gunman in Thursday’s deadly shooting at Old Dominion University as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, a 36-year-old Virginia man previously convicted of attempting to provide material support to the ISIS terrorist group.
The shooting occurred shortly before 10:49 a.m. inside Constant Hall on the Norfolk campus. One person was killed and two others were wounded, including members of the university’s ROTC program. Officials said the suspect was also killed during the incident after students intervened and subdued him.
According to law enforcement officials, Jalloh had previously pleaded guilty in a 2016 federal terrorism case tied to attempts to assist ISIS. Investigators said he attempted to send money to individuals connected to the extremist group and had sought to purchase weapons during a plot involving potential attacks on U.S. military personnel. He served an 11-year prison sentence and was released in 2024.
The FBI said the attack will be investigated as an act of terrorism. Police said two victims were transported to a hospital and appear to be in stable condition, while another victim died at the scene.
Old Dominion University canceled classes for the remainder of Thursday and closed the campus Friday as authorities continued their investigation.
