Colorado Republicans Lauren Boebert and Gabe Evans defended the House GOP’s sweeping budget bill during a Thursday press conference at the state Capitol, despite vocal protests and claims that it would strip Medicaid coverage from up to 200,000 Coloradans. The legislation includes deep social spending cuts alongside expanded tax breaks and new military and border security funding. The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill would add $2.3 trillion to the deficit over 10 years.

Rep. Evans claimed the bill would remove “1.4 million illegal immigrants” from Medicaid, though undocumented immigrants are not eligible for federal Medicaid. Critics say most cuts would impact U.S. citizens and lawful residents, especially in states like Colorado, where an estimated 11% to 18% of enrollees could lose coverage.

Boebert dismissed the protests as “radical leftists,” while Evans deflected questions on how many of his constituents would lose Medicaid. The bill also includes a rollback of Biden-era enrollment policies and imposes work requirements shown to cause coverage losses without increasing employment.

The Senate is expected to propose a different version, but critics argue the House bill favors the wealthy at the expense of low-income Americans.
