New York City, New York. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont will swear in Zohran Mamdani as New York City’s next mayor during a public ceremony on Jan. 1, according to a person familiar with the plans. Mamdani, a Democrat who ran on a progressive platform centered on affordability, selected Sanders—an independent who identifies as a democratic socialist—to administer the oath, despite having broad latitude to choose any authorized official.
Sanders endorsed Mamdani during the campaign and appeared alongside him at multiple events, praising the mayor-elect’s message as “inspirational” and calling him a “visionary” leader when he formally backed him in June. The choice underscores the ideological alignment between the two figures and signals how Mamdani intends to frame the opening of his administration.
This will not be Sanders’ first time swearing in a New York City mayor. He administered former Mayor Bill de Blasio’s oath of office at the start of de Blasio’s second term in January 2018, another moment tied to the city’s leftward political shift.
Mamdani won the mayoral race last month, defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo with 50.8 percent of the vote to Cuomo’s 41.3 percent. More than 1.1 million New Yorkers voted for Mamdani, making him the first mayoral candidate to surpass one million votes in the city since 1969. His term officially begins at 12:01 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
