STOCKTON, Calif. — A family gathering in northern California turned deadly Saturday evening after gunfire inside a banquet hall left 14 people shot and four dead, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said both children and adults were among the victims at the event, which was later identified by local officials as a child’s birthday party.
Deputies responded shortly before 6 p.m. to the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue, where the hall sits in a shared commercial lot. Officials said details remain limited as investigators work to determine what led to the shooting. Early indications suggest the attack may have been targeted, though the sheriff’s office emphasized it is examining all possibilities.
Several victims were transported to area hospitals, but officials have not released updates on their conditions. Vice Mayor Jason Lee said he is in contact with law enforcement to obtain more information and called for answers as the investigation continues.
Authorities are urging anyone with video, eyewitness accounts, or other relevant information to contact the sheriff’s office immediately. California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the incident, according to his office.
The sheriff’s office said detectives will remain at the scene gathering evidence as the community awaits further updates.
