Arkansas farmers are sounding the alarm over worsening economic conditions, citing President Trump’s trade wars and immigration crackdown as key contributors. At a packed forum last Tuesday, hundreds voiced fears that rising costs, falling prices, and labor shortages may destroy family farms. “I have never been as worried as I am now,” one farmer said.

Trump’s tariffs have hit export-dependent crops hard, especially rice and soybeans. Meanwhile, his strict deportation policies have disrupted a labor force long dependent on undocumented workers. One farmer called the tariffs “the ice cream on the cake of a perfect storm.”

Despite Arkansas voting overwhelmingly for Trump in 2024, many farmers are now begging for ad hoc payments just to survive. Online, some critics showed little sympathy, pointing to the state’s continued support for GOP policies that worsen rural conditions.

With rural hospital closures and food assistance cuts looming, frustration is mounting. As one commenter put it: “American farmer: socialism for me, late-stage capitalism for thee.”
