Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a $17.6 billion budget Friday, ending a tense standoff just days before a potential state government shutdown. The bipartisan deal cleared both chambers with strong majorities after weeks of infighting, especially among Republicans in the House, who had previously rejected a nearly identical proposal.

The final budget includes pay raises for state troopers, full funding for the universal school voucher program, and additional grants for fire departments. While House Republicans claimed to have secured $100 million in savings, budget officials noted the final plan’s total spending changed by just $28 from the original.

The Arizona Freedom Caucus unsuccessfully tried to push amendments and delay votes, drawing criticism from fellow Republicans and Democrats alike. “Get your house in order,” said Senate President Warren Petersen.

Several Democrats, including Sen. Priya Sundareshan and Sen. Theresa Hatathlie, voted no, citing concerns over border enforcement funding, lack of tribal consultation, and the absence of voucher oversight.

Still, Hobbs’ signature marked a win for compromise and prevented a shutdown.
