Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes threatened legal action against House Speaker Mike Johnson for delaying the swearing-in of Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, who won a special election to replace her late father, former Rep. Raúl Grijalva.

In a letter to Johnson, Mayes accused the Speaker of violating the Constitution by withholding Arizona’s full representation in Congress. “The right of the residents of CD 7 to representation… may not be delayed or used as leverage,” she wrote. Mayes, a Democrat, warned that her office is considering “every option, including litigation” to compel action.

Democrats claim the delay is politically motivated, aimed at preventing Grijalva from supporting a discharge petition tied to the release of Jeffrey Epstein investigation files. Johnson said the House would seat Grijalva “when in legislative session,” maintaining that standard procedure is being followed.
