(Houston, Texas) Gov. Greg Abbott formally launched his campaign for a fourth term Sunday, unveiling a sweeping property tax plan aimed at restricting local governments and overhauling Texas’s appraisal system. Speaking at a Houston event dubbed the “Future of Texas” announcement, Abbott vowed to “drive a stake through the heart” of rising local tax rates and proposed a constitutional amendment to eliminate school property taxes altogether.

Abbott’s plan calls for capping local spending, requiring home appraisals only every five years, and allowing rollback elections to reduce rates. The governor highlighted recent policy wins, including his 2021 border security initiative, Operation Lone Star, and the $1 billion school-choice law passed earlier this year.

Democrats Andrew White, Gina Hinojosa, and Bobby Cole are preparing challenges for the 2026 election, framing Abbott’s tax proposal as a threat to public school funding. Abbott enters the race with $87 million in campaign funds and support from GOP donor Jeff Yass. His strategy focuses on flipping Harris County and consolidating Republican control statewide.
