Last year was the deadliest in U.S. history, with Covid-19 helping to drive a 15 percent increase in deaths, according to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study seen by POLITICO.
More than 3 million people in the U.S. died in 2020. The virus was the third most common cause of death, behind only heart disease and cancer. In most years the third slot is occupied by accidental injuries.
