Explosions were heard in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, in the early hours of April 17, local media reported.
Air-raid sirens were going off overnight over almost all districts, and residents were told to go to the nearest shelters, the reports said.
There was no immediate official explanation for the blasts in Kyiv. The reports could not be immediately verified.
It comes a day after Russian forces renewed missile strikes on Kyiv and intensified shelling of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, in an apparent strategy to hobble Ukraine’s defenses in preparation for what is expected to be a full-scale Russian assault in the east.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the shelling killed at least three people and wounded 34 others in the northeastern city on April 16.
Russian forces were continuing to redeploy combat and support equipment from Belarus towards eastern Ukraine, including to locations close to Kharkiv and Severodonetsk, Britain’s Defense Ministry of Defense said on its regular bulletin on April 17.
Russian artillery continues to strike Ukrainian positions throughout the east of the country, where Russia plans to renew its offensive activity, it added.
