House Republican Vice Chair Rep. Mike Johnson became the Speaker of the House, taking over during international crises in Israel, Gaza, and Ukraine. Johnson has a nuanced stance on Ukraine; he initially supported Ukraine’s fight against Russia, advocating for “debilitating sanctions” and American energy production to aid European allies. He also voted for the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022. However, he has recently shown skepticism towards further aid, voting against two appropriations bills and questioning the transparency of Ukraine’s use of American taxpayer funds.

On Israel, Johnson has been consistently supportive, especially in its conflict with Hamas. He stated that the U.S. “unequivocally stands with Israel” and will provide the necessary support to eliminate Hamas. Johnson also criticized President Biden’s recent speech, emphasizing the need for the U.S. to act in support of Israel against Hamas terrorists.
