Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the reopening of rail crossings and border bridges with the U.S. following high-level discussions. He emphasized the increasing activity on the border bridges, highlighting the significance of border commerce for both nations. The talks, which included U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, were described as “direct” by López Obrador.
The meeting coincided with the approach of a large migrant caravan, estimated to include around 1,500 individuals, towards the U.S. border. While the leaders discussed various topics, the issue of fentanyl trafficking was minimally addressed. The U.S. has urged Mexico to intensify efforts against fentanyl smuggling. Conversely, Mexico seeks stronger U.S. measures to prevent firearms from entering the country, which could aid powerful drug cartels.
