Since the Lewiston shootings that took place on October 25, Maine’s yellow flag law has been invoked 14 times, which brings the total to 95 times since its implementation in 2020. Approximately 15% of all yellow flag actions occurred after the Lewiston shootings.

After the Lewiston shootings, several cases were reported where individuals made suicidal or homicidal threats, referencing Robert Card, the shooter in Lewiston.

Maine’s yellow flag law requires individuals to be taken into protective custody by the police and undergo a mental health evaluation before firearms can be removed. This sets it apart from red flag laws in other states.
