Representative Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) responded to Representative Kevin McCarthy’s (R-Calif.) statement regarding the Republicans who voted to remove him as Speaker. McCarthy stated that those who voted against him “don’t get to say they’re conservative because they’re angry and chaotic.”

Gaetz led a group of eight Republicans who voted in favor of a motion to vacate the Speakership, alongside all House Democrats.

Gaetz criticized McCarthy’s approach to appropriations negotiations, citing his support for a budget continuing resolution with bipartisan support.

In an interview with Fox News, Gaetz explained his belief that programmatic reform and spending reductions can only be achieved through individual bill conferencing, debate, and amendment. McCarthy had previously criticized Gaetz’s group in a speech after the vote and later stated that they should not refer to themselves as conservatives, a statement which Gaetz disagreed with.
