Claim by Newt Gingrich: Social media posts claim that the U.S. Treasury building flew a Palestinian flag on June 16, 2024.

Reasoning: The claim originated from a now-deleted post by former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich, on X (formerly Twitter). Gingrich’s post stated that the Palestinian flag was flown over the Treasury building, but it lacked photographic evidence. Other social media accounts made similar claims around the same time.

Mike Gwin, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs for the U.S. Treasury, responded to Gingrich’s post, clarifying that the flag in question was a Pride flag. This was further supported by a post from the U.S. Treasury on June 2, 2024, showing Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen raising the Pride flag on the building to commemorate Pride Month.

A Google News search revealed no credible reports supporting the claim that the U.S. Treasury had flown a Palestinian flag. Furthermore, Newt Gingrich’s office confirmed that his post was a misunderstanding, and Gingrich acknowledged the error, emphasizing his belief that only the U.S. flag should be flown at federal buildings.

Fact or Fiction? Fiction. The claim is false. The flag in question was a Pride flag, not a Palestinian flag. The misunderstanding has been acknowledged and corrected by the original claimant, Newt Gingrich.
