Elon Musk is facing widespread criticism after claiming on X that white South Africans are victims of a “white genocide,” accusing mainstream media of ignoring the issue. Musk, who was born in South Africa and now serves as a senior adviser to President Trump, said the media refuses to cover the topic because it “doesn’t fit their narrative that whites can be victims.”

Musk’s comments were in response to a user claiming an entire political party in South Africa advocates violence against the white population — an apparent reference to the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). The controversy reignited after EFF leader Julius Malema sang the “Kill the Boer” chant during a recent Human Rights Day commemoration.

Social media users — particularly South Africans — pushed back on Musk’s claims, accusing him of spreading misinformation and inflaming racial tension. Critics called his statements baseless and pointed to his silence on issues like the war in Gaza and apartheid’s legacy in South Africa.

Senator Marco Rubio echoed Musk’s concerns, calling the chant violent and reaffirming the U.S. offer to provide refuge to persecuted minorities in South Africa.
