Social media platform X, under the ownership of Elon Musk, reinstated the account of U.S. conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. This decision followed a public poll initiated by Musk, where approximately 2 million votes were cast, with 70% supporting Jones’ return. The account, “@RealAlexJones,” had been banned since September 6, 2018, for violating platform policies. This reinstatement comes amidst a series of account revivals since Musk’s acquisition of the platform, including former U.S. President Donald Trump’s account.
X has not officially confirmed the reinstatement, and Reuters was unable to independently verify the status of the Infowars account. Jones, known for promoting conspiracy theories, notably about the Sandy Hook school shooting, faced legal repercussions, including a $1.5 billion damages order to the victims’ relatives. The reinstatement reflects a shift in the platform’s moderation policies under Musk’s leadership.
