The White House rebuked former President Donald Trump for his critical comments about NATO, emphasizing the alliance’s strength under President Biden’s leadership. In a statement by White House spokesperson Andrew Bates, the administration highlighted NATO’s significant expansion and vitality, labeling Trump’s stance as a threat to both American security and global stability. Bates described Trump’s remarks as “appalling and unhinged.”
During a rally in South Carolina, Trump reflected on his presidency’s approach to NATO, claiming the organization was “busted” before his term and suggesting his demands for increased contributions from member countries. He controversially stated he would not protect delinquent members from potential aggression, openly encouraging adversaries.
Trump also voiced opposition to recent Senate foreign aid legislation, advocating for loans instead of grants, particularly in light of a $95.3 billion aid package that includes support for Ukraine and Israel. His criticism contributed to the collapse of a bipartisan deal integrating foreign aid with border security reforms, denouncing it as detrimental to his party and advocating for immediate border closure measures.
