Former President Donald Trump’s campaign announced plans to appeal a decision by Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, barring Trump from the state’s primary ballot. Bellows, a Democrat, concluded that Trump’s involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots breached the 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals who assist insurrections from holding office.
The Trump campaign strongly criticized Bellows, labeling her as a partisan Democrat and accusing her of attempting to steal the election and disenfranchise American voters. Campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung emphasized their intent to challenge the ruling, asserting the Constitution and public support are in their favor. Cheung also pointed to Trump’s lead in polls and criticized President Joe Biden’s administration.
Bellows defended her decision, stating it was based on evidence of Trump using false claims of election fraud to incite violence and his failure to take timely action to prevent the Capitol riots. She addressed the Trump campaign’s demand for her recusal, deeming it untimely, and affirmed her ability to impartially handle the matter, asserting her decision was not influenced by political biases or personal views.
